Spectacular Indianapolis awaits MotoGP
The second ever World Championship visit to Indianapolis Motor Speedway takes place this weekend following 2008’s historic inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix. This weekend’s visit to Indianapolis will see last year’s race-winner Valentino Rossi looking for another victory to augment his standings lead at the twelfth round of the season. In the first ever premier class MotoGP World Championship contest at the famous ‘Brickyard’ last year Rossi took maximum points as he was awarded the win, leading by six seconds when the scheduled 28 lap race was curtailed on the 20th lap, with Nicky Hayden and Jorge Lorenzo placing second and third respectively. Rossi and his MotoGP rivals will hope for good weather this time out - following last year’s event when the remnants of Hurricane Ike hit raceday at the iconic American venue – with the Italian star hoping to increase his current 50 point championship advantage, on the back of yet another success story in the Czech Republic at the last round. Rossi’s Fiat Yamaha team-mate Lorenzo finished just in front of him on the timesheet in the second and final post-race test of the year on the Monday after the Czech race and the Spaniard will aim to bounce back from his two DNFs at Brno and Donington Park, as he attempts to claw his way back into the title battle with six Grands Prix remaining. Meanwhile, an announcement on whether Lorenzo will switch to Ducati or remain with Yamaha for 2010 is imminent.

Lorenzo to confirm 2010 plans next week

The rider’s manager states ‘now is the right moment to make a decision'. MotoGP star Jorge Lorenzo could make an announcement on his future at next week’s Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, if not before, with a confirmed offer from Ducati and a renewed deal from Yamaha on the table. According to his manager and representative, Marcos Hirsch, who spoke to motogp.com on Friday (21st August) Lorenzo and his advisors are now considering the two options, with a move onto Honda machinery already ruled out. Hirsch commented, “Until the middle of this week we were still ticking off the boxes and finalising the offers. We are getting close to concluding our evaluation of the pros and cons of the offers and we acknowledge that now is the right moment to make a decision.” Without hinting as to what the final decision will be Hirsch also stated that confirmation could come next weekend at Indy, with the announcement made by the relevant team. The rider’s manager added that sporting factors would be the key to the decision, commenting, “money is important but it is at the bottom of our list of priorities.”

Rossi closes in on title
Lorenzo soon passed Pedrosa on lap three to chase down Rossi and the pair then exchanged a series of new lap records before Lorenzo made a fine move with seven laps remaining to take the lead. Rossi then made a move at the same corner with five laps to go and Lorenzo buckled under the pressure to crash out and leave Rossi to streak away to a 102nd career win, some 11.766 seconds ahead of Pedrosa. Lorenzo - who also crashed out at Donington last time out - is now 50 points behind Rossi with the absent Stoner back in third in the standings.
Lorenzo close to qualifying pace in Brno warm up
Rossi on pole in Czech Republic despite crash

A rare qualifying crash for the MotoGP World Champion at Brno did not prevent him from securing pole position for Sunday’s eleventh race of the 2009 season. Valentino Rossi survived a late crash during qualifying at the Cardian ab Czech Republic Grand Prix to take his fifth pole position of the season, in clear and sunny conditions at the undulating Brno track. At one of his favourite venues on the calendar Rossi took his Yamaha M1 round the circuit in 1’56.145 on the 21st of his 23 laps after a battle for supremacy with his team-mate and closest World Championship rival Jorge Lorenzo – who trails him by 25 points in the standings and was 0.05s behind the Italian in this session. Lorenzo has looked good throughout the weekend and will be confident of pushing Rossi hard in Sunday’s race. Perhaps the Spaniard will take heart from Rossi’s late crash as he keeps the pressure on from the other side of the Fiat Yamaha pit-box. In the absence of Casey Stoner, Dani Pedrosa could be the biggest threat to Rossi and Lorenzo, with the talented Repsol Honda rider having qualified in third place, just under four tenths down on Rossi.

Rossi and Lorenzo set to resume title battle

World Championship frontrunners both looking for return to form after disappointing Donington results. Fiat Yamaha pair Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo arrive in the Czech Republic for round eleven of the 2009 MotoGP season this week riding high at the top of the standings, despite a disappointing last race in the UK. The highly talented pair sit first and second in the general classification with seven rounds remaining, Rossi leading by 25 points, with an intriguing run-in to the end of the season awaiting. Brno is a particularly special track for Rossi as he took the first of his 101 career victories there, in the 125cc class in 1996. The 30 year-old has a strong record there overall having since added a 250cc victory and four MotoGP wins to his tally, including last year on the way to his eighth World title.

Schumacher out; Badoer in for Ferrari
Ferrari have reacted quickly to the news that Michael Schumacher will not returning by naming Luca Badoer as his replacement. Schumacher, a seven-time F1 world champion, had agreed to help out former team Ferrari and step in for Felipe Massa on a temporary basis after the Brazilian suffered head injuries at the Hungarian Grand Prix last month. But the German has now abandoned the comeback after failing to shrug off a neck injury suffered in a motorbike accident in February. The 40-year-old had intended to return in Valencia on August 23 but testing designed to help Schumacher re-acclimatise himself with the rigours of F1 have shown the injuries to his neck are too severe. Badoer last raced in Formula One a decade ago. He made 48 starts for Lola, Minardi and Forti Course but failed to register a single point.

Stoner sidelined by illness

Casey Stoner has confirmed he will miss the next three rounds of the FIM MotoGP World Championship due to a mystery illness. Stoner, the 2007 MotoGP champion, has been suffering from severe fatigue since the Grand Prix of Catalunya in June and was a dismal 14th at Donington Park in the last race aboard his Marlboro Ducati. Doctors have now advised the 23-year-old Australian, who lies third in the standings behind Fiat Yamaha duo Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, to sit out the next three rounds beginning in Brno this Sunday.

Schumacher set for routine checks
Michael Schumacher is to undergo routine medical checks next week to determine whether he is fit enough to return to Formula One. Schumacher is fully committed to deputising for the injured Felipe Massa at the European Grand Prix in Valencia on August 23. The 40-year-old has embarked on a rigorous training regime which has resulted in him losing over six pounds in weight. However, it was made clear from the outset a week ago any comeback after almost three years in retirement would largely depend on his fitness.
